A Quiet Place Review

Mise en Scène A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place is a horror film- The use of a quiet place being a horror film is it inflict fear amongst the audience watching this portrays a world in which the audience would live as the characters scaring them and giving them more of an incentive to watch the film most films within the horror film genre consist of something supernatural for example the use of withes ghosts vampires, however a quiet place has used aliens with a distinct sense of sound and blinded vision this gives fans of horrors a different approach on a horror film as it tends to lean away from the normal conventions these can also implement psychological distress / the creation of a psychological fear.

A Quiet Place Summary- A family amongst monsters that are blind but are extremely noise sensitive trying to live their lives, forcing them to communicate via sign language to keep the monsters from invading their abode.

In depth horror film conventions analysis- most if not all horror films will consist of featuring fears, mostly which are common some including the fear of the unknown, death, nightmares, vulnerability alienation and loss of identity. A quiet place includes multiple of these while also swaying away from the conventions of a 'normal' horror film.

The use of continuity editing within the film makes it run smoothly throughout the length of the 1hr 31mins film. A Quiet Place also uses a blank screen to differentiate between the days of the story just containing the day in which it was filmed on. The strength of editing skills used in the film really creates a bond to keep the viewers and audiences watching and being engrossed within the film with the use of small breaks which creates tension also keeping the audience’s attention on the film therefore holding their attention to the film and nothing else this will also help with the film as in will keep the audience watching meaning they will be more likely to get jump scared which is something the directors can take advantage of and catch them off guard.

The sounds that are used within the film match the intensity that is needed within a certain scene and when they need to relieve the tension that the film is trying to incorporate into the audiences sense of safety and wellbeing by adding certain music into a certain place add an exact feeling amongst the audience such as a calming slow bit of background music appose to tense loud and don't stick to a certain type of rhythm, this makes me feel a way about the film that it has incorporated the perfect noises and sounds throughout the whole of the movie to intrigue the audience into falling deeper into the film.

Mise en scene used within A Quiet Place I can honestly say that is some of the best that I have ever seen especially because of the fact that it is a horror film and having the right setting and props used to really set the mood that is one key thing that a lot of horror films miss out on is really getting to the audience and not putting them into the correct mode for the right scenes.  They have done this within A Quiet Place by the use in the main scene in which Emily Blunt the mother of the family goes into labour at the farm alone with father and son  on a fishing trip and the daughter sulking because she couldn't go fishing instead as this happens the film becomes darker and the mother {Emily Blunt] upon going into labour steps on a nail and attracts a nearby alien to they're homestead thus being a bad thing she rushes to change the colour the lights illuminating the farm to red these colours really connote to danger, anguish and scare these colours set a tone of panic amongst the characters and amongst the audience also the setting of the family owning and big farm they set the scene of getting lost and being in a big place alone induces worry. Props are placed well in the movie as at the start of the film whilst scouting for medical supplies as one boy was sick and poorly in which they went into a store and all crisps were still on shelves as the aliens can detect any noises above whispering they keep these types of prop placements throughout the whole of the film.

The main scene in A Quiet Place is towards the start in which the family have gone out to gather medicine and general supplies needed from a nearby town, speaking with nothing more than a whisper. everyone engaging in retrieving supplies while the middle child {Cade Woodward} was searching for a toy to bring home when he came across a toy rocket he was interested in so he snatched it up, the toy held two batteries which cause the rocket to light up and make noises something in which is not an option as that puts the whole family’s survival on the line in which the father confiscated, removed the batteries and placed to toy away from the child in which they were about to leave with just the boy {Cade Woodward} and his sister [Millicent Simmonds} where she gives her brother the toy without the batteries an leaves then the boy snatches the batteries on his way out and the family makes their way back to their farm. Closing in on the farm the boy is walking at the back of the group out of view of the whole family loading the batteries into the rocket and proceeds to turn it on releasing a whirring noise attracting nearby monster to their location the father darted to save the son but by the time he got to him he was too late and the monster snatched the child and got away.

The camera techniques used in the film are perfect for the intensity and lack off when needed during the film A Quiet Place has had an exceptional amount of different camera angles and techniques however I think that some of the camera angles used made the film stand out and differ from other horror films as I personally think that it has used a substantial amount of rare but engaging  angles including blurred shots that contained characters adding emphasis to the small clip also used in the film is a heap of moving shots sliding smoothly around stairs at one point giving you a perfect view of the setup in which was downstairs containing the supplies needed to survive and keep look over the farm such as CCTV cameras etc.
